In the US where the top 2% are getting richer and richer with help of Republicans and the Tea Party, and the other 98% are only getting poorer, Republican law makers in 2 states are upping the ante.

In Georgia and Tennessee, Republican law makers are in the process of passing legislation that would cut food stamps and other forms of government assistance for poor families if their children’s grades fall below all A’s. This would apply to all families on assistance, even those who have students with learning disabilities and other handicaps. Under the law, assistance could be cut up to 30% depending on the grades of the child. In families with multiple children, up to 40% based on the average of all of the children in the home. Students who get lunch assistance from the state would also see a decrease in the amount of assistance for their lunches.

The events of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and the shootings all over the US that have followed over the last 3 days have sparked a huge uptrend in talks about Gun Violence and what to do to prevent it and protect against it. While I agree that there are certain things that need to be done. Some parents and companies are going overboard. Now, I would negligent if I didn’t point out this is America, Capitalism reigns here. Companies will produce and market anything that there is even the slightest demand for. It is the nature of the system. That’s not to say its right, it however is how it works.

Guns In School

Guns In School

I have already talked about the shooting in Newtown Connecticut with a bit of depth, This is a follow-up to that article and the repercussions that are taking place across the country because of that shooting.  The news has been filled since last Friday with talks about the shooting in Connecticut. Since then their have been 5 more shootings across the US on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Amongst these shootings is one at a mall, stopped by a man with a concealed carry permit, sadly not before at least 1 person died. Another incident was at a church outside of Atlanta Georgia.  One took place in a hospital in Birmingham Alabama. The death toll in the last week from gun violence is now more than 35 lives taken.
