No, it doesn’t stand for rest in peace. Its the newest trend in ammunition. The RIP or Radically Invasive Projectile is designed to cut like a saw through steel, fabric, glass, bullet proof glass, etc. Upon entry it throws off 8 spikes that travel away from the core of the bullet. In addition the projectile is designed to be used in automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Specifically the kind of weapons that can have 250 round clips and fling 80 rounds a minute.
The problem isn’t so much that ammunition like this actually exists as much as anyone can get it. The round is able to penetrate most materials, narrowing down the number of places that are safe is someone is coming after you to almost no where. Even banks and other institutions that have bullet proof glass and other precautions, won’t be safe any more.
The bigger problem even still is the people that look at this and drool. I have personally seen people who upon looking at it and reading its specs drool and express that they plan to “replace all of their ammo with this”.
While the second amendment does grant the right to bare arms. It was written many years ago when the most powerful gun was a rifled musket that shot hard to come by led balls and took 10+ minutes to reload . The framers of the constitution never dreamed of weapons that can fire 100 rounds a minute and fit in your pocket. Had they have, the provisions would undoubtedly be very different.
That being said, yes it is your right to own a gun should you so desire and you pass the joke of a background screening. No one is denying that. What they are saying is that people don’t need weapons that can fire 100 rounds a minute with bullets that explode on impact with a mountain of magazines holding 100s of rounds a piece. Thats not for self defense, thats not for hunting, those things exist to kill mass amounts of people in a short amount of time. People do not need that kind of firepower. There are many people in the US (especially paranoid people south of the Mason-Dickson line that) that are not just armed to the teeth but are better armed that our military.
This is just want the people who go shoot up places want. No gun control, ammunition like this (and lots and lots of it), and the biggest clips they can find. Imagine the devastation if someone had 2 auto/semi-auto weapons with several 200+ round clips full of these. It is truly horrifying. If something like this is going to exist it needs to be regulated. Guns need regulation. Clip and magazine sizes need to be regulated. Because allowing anyone to buy anything and trusting them to do the right thing will not work. If you want a gun and can pass a background check thats fine. But no one needs to be able to fire hundreds of rounds in minute. No one needs to have hundreds of rounds loaded at one time.
