If you are one of those people posting about how “it has nothing to do with guns”, “this wouldn’t happen if we had more guns”, or “gun control caused this shooting” while at the same time posting “my thoughts and prayers are with the victims of the Newtown shooting” or something similar. This is aimed heavily at you and for the rest of the people this is meant to serve as an informational post. Please read this with an open mind. The suggestions in the post are easy to understand and fairly easily implemented.
Your prayers may be cathartic to you. They may make you feel better, but they don’t do anything to bring those children back or prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again. America’s gun culture and right wing politicians have convinced those that blindly follow them (through outlets like Fox News and others) that if every man woman and child doesn’t have a gun that their freedom is being oppressed. These are also the same millionaires that are holding tax breaks for people making less than $250,000 a year hostage until the millionaires and billionaires of this country get the same breaks (most millionaires, especially those which live on the west coast (Hollywood and Silicon Valley) and actually support giving the middle and lower class tax breaks). They aren’t looking out for you they are looking out for themselves.
America has been the grounds of 11 of the deadliest mass shootings/massacres in the last 50 years around the world. (Finland comes in second with 2 mass shootings) So think about that for a moment, 11/20 in one country, 9 for the rest of the world. More than a little disproportionate. Of the 11 deadliest shootings in the US, five have happened from 2007 onward. So why does this happen? Its simple, the right wing agenda plainly states that they don’t believe there should be any regulation of any kind on guns. They believe that any regulation is a violation of their constitutional right to get drunk drive around and shoot animals in their gas guzzling 4×4 truck with its rebel flag. This is wrong. You have the right to bare arms, its laid out in the second amendment of the constitution. But there are exceptions, if you have a criminal history you should not have a gun. If you are mentally handicapped, mentally ill, or just plain crazy… you do not need a gun. No person (excluding military) needs an automatic weapon that can store and shoot 100+ rounds without a reload. On top of that the states that have stricter gun control laws are safer (see map).
You want safer schools? Good, so do I. But sitting there praying will fix nothing. If you want a miracle praying is the least effective thing you can do. If you need a miracle… be the miracle. If you want change you have to be the change. Get up and call, email, or write your congressman, tell them you want metal detectors in schools. Tell them you want automatic weapons banned. (at least if its not automatic there is a limit to the damage that can be done). Tell them that you want people trying to get a gun to have to under go an a check for mental stability and a stricter background check. Tell them you want an armed guard in schools. Im not saying guns should be banned, but I am saying that only military should have automatic weapons and only in combat environments. I am saying that if you are mentally unstable or mentally ill you should not be allowed to have a gun. And if you are able to obtain a gun you need to be trained, not just handed a gun and a box of ammo to do whatever you want with. Remember the constitution grants the right to bear arms (which actually means a weapon in general be that a knife, gun etc), it does not grand the right to be an uninformed dumb ass.
If you want the world to change you have to change it. But America is going to have to overcome its good ‘ol boy gun culture and grow up. And I don’t want to hear anyone preach at me about how your “religion”, “spirituality”, or “personal relationship with god” gives you any moral superiority. Almost all of the major atrocities in history (inquisition, salem witch trials, crusades, the holocaust, 9/11, columbine, the dark knight shooting, and many many others) have been perpetrated by religion and those that “have a personal relationship with god”. No these things don’t happen because your “god” was taken out of schools. If you want your “god” taught to your children, take them to a church. Remember, if you want religion taught in public schools, all religions not just yours will be taught. Contrary to what the Republicans would have you believe, this country is not and has never been a “christian nation”. America was founded on the belief that whatever you want to believe you can. That the government doesn’t have the right to tell you what to believe and that your religion doesn’t have the right to tell the government what to do. This is what the separation of church and state means. You are free to believe what you want to believe and practice your religion. But these kinds of things don’t happen because your religion wasn’t taught in public schools.
